Columba held out her hands, palms up. “Lay your palms on mine and close your eyes.”

Regina did as she asked, not expecting much, but hopeful that maybe today they could push through, get beyond what was holding her back. Maybe because she had been too afraid to fight for her place as a Memoria, as a Soul Keeper, as the heir to the throne, she’d convinced herself she couldn’t. Or maybe whatever was behind the block was a boogieman she shouldn’t release.

She sucked in a breath at the thought, her heart thudding in her chest. No. No excuses. She’d told Columba she’d try, and she would.

The sounds and smells around her sprang to life, stimulating her senses. The soft rustle of the dying leaves, the creak of the tree trunks almost masking the chirp of birds in search of food before winter settled in, Diandra’s scratching as she relentlessly searched for worms. The chill in the air competed with the warmth of the fall sun, giving her goosebumps that didn’t know whether they were coming or going.

“Listen to your heart. Feel the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe. Fall into yourself, blocking out everything else,” Columba said.

“I don’t think blocking is a good word to use right now.”

“Regina!”

“Okay, sorry.”

The sensations around Regina fell away until all she could feel was the beating of her heart, the soft rasp of air in her lungs, the whoosh of blood in her veins. As peaceful as her innards were, her thoughts still raced; she couldn’t get them to slow.

“Let them go,” Columba said.

“I’m trying, but they’re as sticky as honey.”

“No, I mean let your thoughts run. Give them free rein. If your mind needs to work, let it. Maybe that will allow me to dive deeper into your psyche.”

Regina snorted. “That’s the first time anyone has said to let my thoughts run free.”

“You’ve been told for years to suppress your mind, your emotions; let’s go the other way this time. Now stop talking and let go.”

“Go where? What am I looking for? I need a clue here.”

Shhh.

“Okay fine, I’ll be quiet.” Regina closed her eyes again.

“I didn’t say anything,” Columba said.

“You just shooshed me.”

Columba grabbed her hands. They looked at each other.

“I didn’t shoosh you…out loud,” Columba said, her eyes wide.

“But I heard you.”

“I thought it.”

“No way,” Regina said with a gasp.

“I told you I’m good.”

Regina pulled her hands out of Columba’s grasp, held them out palms down, and shook them. “Do it again.”

“Close your eyes and concentrate,” Columba ordered.

Regina obeyed her friend and let her mind free, questing for her friend.

You need to pluck your eyebrows.

“What?”

Columba burst out laughing. “Just kidding. Your caterpillars go brilliantly with your wild hair.”

“Hey!”

“Now that we know you can hear me, let’s try something harder.” Columba shook her hands at Regina this time. “I want you to talk to me with your mind.”

“Any more insults about my eyebrows or hair and you aren’t going to like what I say.”

“I’ll take my chances.”

Regina closed her eyes yet again.
